Discipline of Public Administration and Development Management

Initially established as the Department of Public Administration, the Discipline of Public Administration and Development Management reflects changing priorities and paradigms in the public sector. In line with the University's vision of becoming "the Premier University of African Scholarship", it aims to be a regional centre of excellence for public sector research, education, training and development.

The Discipline of Public Administration and Development Management at UKZN is a major player in the higher education sector in the province and beyond. It offers quality academic, professional and community outreach programmes that not only dovetails with regional governance, development and university education, but also reflects the developmental priorities of the South African state as enshrined in the Constitution.

Through its academic programmes and research activities, the discipline seeks to develop a new cadre of competent, professional, effective and efficient managers critical to the transformation of the South African public and non-governmental sector.

In this context, and mindful of social justice and equity for service delivery, the Discipline seeks to provide management training in the public and non-governmental sector and to conduct research, carry out consultancy and provide policy support in the fields of public and development management.
